LGA wants to help cut energy bills

Councils across England and Wales have been urged to sign up to a campaign for a national home insulation programme.

The Local Government Association's four main group leaders have written to every council leader, asking them to lobby their MPs to back its Small Change, Big Difference campaign.

The aim is to lift half a million out of fuel poverty by cutting £200 off 10 million households' energy bills and slash domestic carbon emissions by 20%.

The LGA proposes that the programme would be funded by the six main energy suppliers with councils playing a central delivery role.

David Shakespeare, leader of the LGA Conservative Group, said: "It is only local government with its intricate knowledge of the country's housing stock that can deliver a national home insulation programme."

The letter says council support for the campaign would "contribute enormously to the on-going discussions about the proposals the LGA is holding with Ministers and other MPs over the summer and autumn".
