Local government has an integral role to play in developing sustainable communities. No other institution can harness all of the other-conflicting interests that must come together to create places that work.
For the local authorities that scooped last year's LGC & HSJ awards for Sustainable Communities it was a chance to see their hard work in developing community partnerships pay off. Commenting on the 2008 ceremony, Martin Dean, deputy director of the Leeds Initiative, winner of the Sustainable Communities Partnership Award, said: "Winning the award shows the benefit of partnership working in creating sustainable communities."
This week LGC and HSJ start their search for those councils forging ahead in making their communities a better place to live with the launch of our 2009 awards. The fourth annual Sustainable Communities Awards celebrates innovation, teamwork and forward-thinking in councils that are transcending traditional boundaries by uniting resources and expertise to tackle a wide range of community issues.
LGC editor Karen Day says: "The awards highlight the inspirational achievements of those working on the front-line in our communities.
"They showcase how, through collaboration, councils, the health, voluntary and private sectors are working together to tackle challenging socio-economic issues while breaking barriers to community cohesion."
The award has 15 categories to reflect the diverse areas of council work that can lead to more sustainable communities and are sponsored by local government agencies and providers leading on these respective areas of change.
If you think your project or partnerships have what it takes to stand out in the eyes of a team of influential judges send your entries by 17 October 2008. The awards will be presented at a gala dinner and ceremony at the Brewery, London, on Thursday 5 February 2009.
