Margaret Eaton consolidated her position as frontrunner to become the Local Government Association's next chairman as potential rivals dropped out of the race (LGC, 17 July).
Essex CC leader Lord Hanningfield and Bracknell Forest BC leader Paul Bettison both confirmed they would not stand and backed the Bradford City MDC councillor to win. Tandridge DC leader Gordon Keymer has previously indicated he would stand.
Cllr Bettison said: "Margaret would be a very good appointment and help dispel the image that the LGA is full of middle-aged men from the south."
Nominations must be put forward by 8 August, with a vote slated for 8 September.
