A record-breaking number of people attended this year's event, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
During the ceremony, chair of the government's Sustainable Development Commission told councils that they have a vital role in promoting sustainability, but must make greater efforts to tackle climate change.
Giving the keynote address at this year's LGC / Health Service Journal Sustainable Communities Awards on Monday, Jonathan Porritt emphasised the importance of local efforts to improve sustainability.
"This is all about getting things delivered at the local level," he said, adding that local strategic partnerships have a particularly important role to play in driving progress on the issue.
