The government's eco-town drive has suffered a further setback after a council pulled its bid.

East Lindsey DC  decided against a bid to build a 5,000 home eco-town at a meeting last night.

The Lincolnshire council's move followed strong opposition by residents and protesters after the council's application was shortlisted.

Instead, the authority has said it will "develop its work with local partners to address the key issues of affordable housing, skills, investment and coastal flood defences".

'Important debate'

Commenting on the decision, council leader Doreen Stephenson (Con), said: "It was important to have had this debate and that we clearly identify key issues raised by the eco-town expression of interest.

"Working with our communities, our local and regional partners, we must now focus our efforts on securing a realistic, funded range of opportunities that will address the core issues of affordable housing, skill development and investment in the district."

The council said it will work with local communities to demand support from regional and national resources to improve the lives of all residents in our district.
