Flood-displaced families fall by quarter

Water flood

Around 3,400 flood-hit households are still out of their homes

The number of families hit by the floods and still out of their homes has fallen by a quarter in the last month to 3,400.

Local government minister John Healey has said that 1,300 families returned home in June. Around 48,000 homes were affected by last summer's floods.

He said that the number of council and housing association tenants still not back at home is down by 100 to around 70 families.

According to the latest statistics, Kingston upon Hull still has the most people displaced by the floods at 1,409. West Berkshire has to the most council or housing association tenants displaced with 31 while across all councils 72 social tenants are displaced.

Council efforts praised

Mr Healey praised the work of councils and housing associations and highlighted efforts in Hull, East Riding, Tewkesbury, Doncaster and Wychavon. These towns have seen the most returned this month to their homes.

John Healey said: "The number of flood-hit families still out of their homes, living in temporary accommodation, caravans or the top floor of their homes has fallen by a quarter in the last month and the numbers in caravans have halved.

"This shows that thanks to sustained efforts of councils, housing associations, insurers and Government the numbers of those still not back home are falling faster and faster. Councils and housing associations have made particularly good progress getting their tenants home - 100 families have gone back in the last month."
