Garlick is named chief of County Durham

George Garlick has been named chief executive of the new County Durham unitary council.

Mr Garlick has been chief executive at Stockton-on-Tees BC since 1995, when that council made the transition to unitary status after abolition of the former Cleveland CC. It has become one of the top 10 best performing councils.

His appointment makes Durham the first of the new county unitaries to fill its top job. Mr Garlick is expected to take up the post at the end of September.

£1bn budget

Mr Garlick will run services for some 500,000 people, lead 22,000 staff and oversee a budget of around £1bn.

Council leader Simon Henig (Lab) said: "In George, we have recruited one of the outstanding stars of local government who has built his reputation on leading change, delivering improvements and making things better."

Mr Garlick said his experience at Stockton had shown him "how unitary local government can transform an area and radically improve the quality of council services".
