Tower Hamlets' film: 'dramatic and hard-hitting, but it needs to be'

Tower Hamlets LBC has produced a shocking viral campaign to deter knife crime.

The short film clip, which is being promoted on social networking sites Youtube and Bebo, depicts a young man being chased through the borough's streets.

The man is stabbed, and in a dramatic twist the victim and the young man who stabbed him turn out to be the same person.

The film's message echoes those from the Home Office to warn people that if you carry a knife you risk it being turned on you and violence escalating.

'People are very concerned'

Tower Hamlets LBC's lead member for Cleaner, Safer, Greener, Abdal Ullah (Lab) said: "We don't have a particular issue with knife crime in the borough, but it would be foolish to ignore what is happening across the capital and the country.

The film's hard-hitting message

"People are certainly very concerned about knife crime at the moment and we wanted to get our young people to think about it and talk to them in a way that engages them," he said.

"There is no doubt that the film we have produced is dramatic and hard-hitting. But it needs to be. We know that a film won't solve the issues around knife crime alone, but we also know that encouraging young people to talk about it and showing the potential consequences is a good way to get them to give serious consideration to the issue."

The clip will be offered for use by community and youth groups.
