The battle to succeed Sir Simon Milton as chairman of the Local Government Association will be fought out between five candidates.
Early frontrunner and ex-LGA Conservative group leader Margaret Eaton will be joined on the ballot paper by Gordon Keymer, leader of Tandridge DC; Lee Martin of Sunderland City Council; Keith Mitchell, leader of Oxfordshire CC; and Stephen Parnaby, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
While Ms Eaton and Mr Keymer wasted no time in announcing their candidacies, the names of Mr Martin and Mr Parnaby will be less familiar in local government.
Mr Martin, opposition group leader in Sunderland, was elected in 2004 and played a prominent role in the failed mayoral referendum campaign in 2001.
Mr Parnaby was awarded an OBE in the latest New Year's Honours list.
Ballot papers with the names of the five Conservatives will be sent out this week with polling running through until the second week of September.
