Lay-by burgers stay on the menu

Snack van owners have been assured by a local council that their roadside burgers and bacon butties can stay on the menu.

Guildford BC made the headlines recently over what was interpreted as a crackdown on high-fat offerings at lay-by eateries.

They were being advised to offer at least one healthy option - such as jacket potatoes - as part of a 'less grease, more grilled rule'.

Last week's LGC reported that the owners of the vans had been warned they faced closure unless healthy alternatives were offered.

Now - according to the Metro newspaper - chief executive David Hill says the the council was merely re-stating an existing policy.

"In the 14 years since the policy was first agreed, we have not closed any snackvans or withdrawn any trader's licences and we do not intend to do so in the future," he told the paper.

He insisted the guidelines were optional.
