Warning of council tax phone scam
Kent Trading Standards is warning of a phone scam in which people are told they have not paid the correct amount of council tax.
Residents have been called by someone pretending to work either for Kent County Council or a borough council.
Those answering are told they have either paid too much council tax, and are entitled to a rebate, or not enough and must pay more or be fined. The caller then asks for bank details.
Kent Trading Standards has received six calls in the past two weeks about this type of scam and says many others are likely to have been targeted but not reported it.
Officers say anyone who receives these calls should not give out any personal information.
The assistant head of Kent Trading Standards, Ian Treacher, said: “We are pleased that those who contacted us did not give away any personal details but we know there may be those who will and then realise too late that it is a scam.
“It is important that people know Kent County Council would not contact people about council tax payments and to report any suspicious calls.”
