'Doomsday' civil servants plan 20% cuts
Secret plans for 20% cuts in public spending are said to be under preparation by senior civil servants.
Whitehall mandarins have begun creating detailed ‘doomsday dossiers’ containing reductions in expenditure that are far deeper than those being proposed by Labour and Conservative politicians, accoridng to the Sunday Times.
The story came as Audit Commission chief executive Steve Bundred called for a public sector pay freeze in the Observer and accused party leaders of failing to be honest with people.
Meanwhile, the Financial Times reports that a new KPMG study has found that senior civil servants are not facing up to the probable need to rein in spending.
It found that three out of five of senior Whitehall officials were looking for ways to increase rather then decrease their departmental budgets.
An example given was charging for services or increasing grants from central government.
