New mayors in Doncaster and N Tyneside
The people of Doncaster have elected an English Democrat mayor, while North Tyneside MBC’s Labour mayor has been ousted by a Conservative.
Peter Davies replaces outgoing Doncaster Mayor Martin Winter (Ind), having campaigned for a cut in councillor numbers from 63 to 21, the scrapping the authority’s newspaper, and for a capping of the mayor’s salary at a maximum £30,000 a year.
The anti-EU former schoolteacher has also called for a referendum on the future governance of the borough and the end to council literature being translated into other languages.

At Hartlepool BC,Stuart Drummond (Ind) - pictured left - was handed a third term as elected mayor, beating 12 rivals in the process.
Mr Drummond was originally elected in 2002 standing as Hartlepool FC mascot H’angus the Monkey.
Last to declare of Thursday’s three mayoral elections was North Tyneside MBC, where Linda Arkley (Con), beat incumbent elected Mayor John Harrison into second place.
Results of a second count released early on Friday evening recorded Ms Arkley garnered 27,083 votes to Mr Harrison’s 22,364.
