LGC Awards 2012 - Winners Supplement

All the details from the 2012 LGC Awards including details of our first Best Practice and Future Thinking Summit.

The high standard shines out

It has never been more important to celebrate the achievements of local government, recognise the considerable efforts of those who drive that success - and to share knowledge and experience. This is what the LGC Awards are all about.

That’s why this year we held our first Best Practice and Future Thinking Summit in the afternoon ahead of the awards ceremony.

During the event, Council of the Year and Most Improved Council finalists made their final presentations in a live judging session, watched by delegates. The session made our tough judging process even more rigorous and gave the audience a glimpse into the decision facing the judges.

There were also presentations from previous winners in the best practice zone and a series of big issue future-thinking discussions led by eminent chief executives. These important additions to the LGC Awards helped to enhance the opportunity to learn and share.

As well as sharing best practice, the awards have an important role to play in celebrating and rewarding achievement. I am proud that LGC helps to highlight that success and am delighted that this year’s awards were bigger than ever. We received hundreds of entries and the high standard shines out. At the ceremony itself we had record attendance, with more than 1,300 people in the room.

The following pages give a snapshot of the winners and the highly commended entries from each category - those who overcame tough competition tosecure the judges’ favour. Congratulations to you all. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the entrants for sharing their achievements, our judges for so generously giving their time, and the LGA and our sponsors for their ongoing support and involvement.

Learning from each other

Carolyn Downs

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the winners of this year’s LGC Awards. This is an enormously challenging time for councils and the public sector as a whole, and so it is vitally important that we share the very best practice that is best demonstrated in the sector day in, day out.

Within these pages are shining examples of some of the very best innovation and performance in local government today.

Everybody who has made a contribution to their council winning can be proud of their achievements. Proud not just because they have won an award - but proud because their work will have improved services and made a tangible difference to the lives of local people.

Parts of the local government workforce sometimes get a rough ride in the press. These awards pay tribute to the phenomenal work that goes on 24/7, 365 days a year but so often goes unrecognised.

One of the great things about our sector is its ability to continuously improve and drive for higher standards. So I congratulate everybody on their success this year, but am confident of seeing an even higher standard of entries in 2013.

Carolyn Downs, chief executive, LGA
