Schools Minister Robin Squire has announced that the 1000th school has been given the go-ahead to opt out of local authority control. He said:'I have just approved proposals from Wicklewood County Primary School in Norfolk to become the 1000th self-governing (grant-maintained) school.

'There are now 930 self- governing schools actually operating in England. I have approved or am minded to approve proposals from a further 69 schools. In addition the Department has received or is awaiting proposals from 60 other schools which have voted yes in self-governing ballots.'
