Large-scale regeneration plans for the Thames Gateway have been backed with£100m of funding over two years from the Department for Communities & Local Government.

The London Thames Gateway Development Corporation's corporate plan for 2006-2008 aims to build 40,000 homes and create 28,000 jobs by 2016.

The plan prioritises spending in three areas:£52m on town and neighbourhood centres;£27.4m on transport and accessibility; and£9.1m on environmental improvements until March 2008. It says operating costs will reach£10.1m in two years, at a total cost of£98.6m.

Corporation chief executive Peter Andrews said: 'Much of the money invested will be used to fund the first phase of some significant long term development projects.'
