138 children in England were taken into care on a voluntary basis because their families were made homeless, health minister John Bowis said (WA 11 May col. 156).

Replying to a question from Jean Corston (Labour, Bristol East) on how many gypsy or traveller children were taken into care because their parents were made homeless, Mr Bowis said those groups were not separately identified.

The figures from 1977 revealed that the number of homeless children taken into care has dramatically dropped since that year when it was 559.
