Gateshead MBC has been given the go-ahead by Tyne and Wear sponsor minister Lord Fraser to proceed with a multi-million development project designed to open up a 27-hectare area of the town for industry, the Newcastle Journal reports (p12).

The scheme will cost £4m but Lord Fraser announced a £2.75m contribution from the single regeneration budget.

Gateshead council leader George Gill said:

'There is enormous potential on this site. By working in partnership with Railtrack we can significantly improve access to it, which should attract new businesses.'
