Middlesbrough BC has defended a decision by one of its schools to ban children from a Christmas party because of poor attendance levels, the Northern Echo reported yesterday (p4).

Brackenhoe School has been criticised for barring 30 first-year pupils from an end-of-term party.

But a spokesman from the council said parents were warned earlier in the term that their children would not be able to attend the party if their attendance record fell below 90 per cent.

'Although it may seem harsh in the short term, it is designed for the long term benefit of the child,' the spokeman said.
