Birmingham heads the table of local education authorities providing free school meals, with 52,990 pupils receiving such meals, according to education junior minister Eric Forth (WA, 11 July, col458).

However, a greater proportion of pupils in Knowsley LEA receive free meals, in relation to children receiving school meals, free or otherwise.

The January 1993 figures show that 37% of schoolchildren in England receiving school meals receive them free, representing 1,141,326 meals.
