The Fire Brigade Union has warned of strike action after Cleveland Fire Authority axed 42 jobs in a £1m budget cutting measure.

The Northern Echo (12 Oct, p4) cites Hartlepool Council BC deputy leader Russell Hart's plea: 'We want the government to recognise the specific problems and circumstances faced by Cleveland Fire Brigade.'

Chief fire officer Derek Thacker said that natural wastage would account for the job losses over three years.
