The Newcastle flats offered for sale at 50p each have attracted prospective purchasers from New Zealand and the US, according to The Financial Times (p8).

The North Benwell Housing Organisation, which put the properties on the market, has issued more than 600 information packs, and an open day at the boarded-up flats attracted scores of visitors.

MOre than 100 formal purchase applications are expected by the closing date, a week today. The housing organisation and Newcastle City Council meet next week to decide how best to choose the five purchasers who will each pay£1 for a pair of flats.

Preferred purchasers, who will need to pay for the first£12,000 of refurbishment work on the flats, would be intended owner-occupiers with evidence of financial viability.
