European grants for Wales totalling £54.7m have been announced by Welsh environment minister Gwilym Jones.

They are the first awards from the European Regional Development Fund and the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund under the 1994-1996 Single Programming Documents for Industrial South Wales and Rural Wales.

The 272 projects which have received grant approval in full or in principle, include community development and urban regeneration packages; development of business parks; business access improvements; business support and tourism schemes.

Mr Jones said: 'These schemes, which cover a wide range of activities, will play a significant part in the economic regeneration of Wales, building on the support given under previous programmes.'
