The London Evening Standard (p19) reports that a team of auditors at Redbridge LBC claims to have found 51 cases where pensioners were receiving monthly payments above their entitlement during six years when the borough was Tory controlled.
The council has sent letters to those former employees affected, warning that they face cuts of up to a third in their pension payments.
The illegal payments are thought to total about£5m, says the paper.
A previous investigation in 1995 found that 55 senior officers had been given enhanced pension packages and perks to persuade them to take early retirement and save the council money.
Liz Pearce, leader of the council's majority Labour group, said: 'We very much regret the necessity to take this action, but legally we have not option.
'We will offer every assistance to those concerned to help them ensure that their interests are fully represented.'
