The Economist reports (p15, 21) the shortfall that local authorities are facing in providing care in the community is around £600m.

The two reports, both arguing that the government is failing the mentally-ill, argues that murders committed by schizophrenics show that the 'care of many of these very ill people has vanished in a communication gap between doctors and social workers'.
