A£66m package for tackling truancy is to be unveiled by the government this week, reported the Sunday People (p6).

Ministers want to reduce by a third the one million children who are skipping school every year. The plan is part of a three-year£500m strategy to make learning more attractive. A key element will

be more work-related courses.

But education secretary David Blunkett is also urging councils to take more parents to court over their children's truancy.
