Earl Ferrers, minister for the countryside today welcomed the launch of the third round of Rural Challenge.

The competition, run by the Rural Development Commission, offers six prizes of up to £1 million to new partnerships who will make a significant impact on particular social and economic problems in rural areas.

Earl Ferrers said: 'Rural Challenge provides the opportunity for local communities, institutions and businesses to form partnerships with the public sector involved to put forward bids which tackle local problems.

'Last years winning bids will make a significant contribution to their communities. I very much hope that this years bids will prove to be as imaginative and as successful as were those of last year.'

The 16 Rural Development Areas eligible to bid in round three are: Cleveland, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Cumbria, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Isle of Wight, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, North Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Somerset, Suffolk and West Yorkshire.
