Police say an eight-year-old boy was responsible for a fire which gutted a Barnsley MBC primary school, causing more than £1 million damage.

The boy, a pupil at Gooseacre school in Thurnscoe, was interviewed by officers but will not face charges. It is understood he set light to some bushes outside the school and police are satisfied he did not intend to burn it down.

The fire means an extra week's holiday for Gooseacre pupils. The council will install temporary classrooms while repair work is carried out.
