Plans for an £80m light transport link through Hertfordshire go before the county council today, reports BBC Three Counties.

The tram or light rail system linking Watford with Hertford, via St Albans and Hatfield, is designed to ease traffic congestion.

Work on the route may not begin for another five years but Spencer Robeson, of the council's passenger transport unit, hopes the authority will agree to fund further feasibility studies.

He commented: 'These types of systems do need a certain amount of planning and information; and before we go out to full consultation we need to develop the system in terms of its alignment, type of system, and to get much more accurate assessment of estimates and demand forecasts.

'In terms of the future traffic growth that is being predicted, we are talking about a 40-50% increase and we are really in a situation where our general environment cannot sustain those sorts of increase and we have to promote alternative modes'.
