CCTV surveillance in town centres has led to marked reductions in crime and has virtually eradicated offences such as car theft and vandalism in some areas, reported The Sunday Times (p7).

Councils, traders and residents have until 20 November to apply for home office funding as part of the third CCTV Challenge competition, worth a total of £15m.

Home office minister David Maclean said he believed the cameras provided massive potential insurance savings.

The Sunday Telegraph reported (p 2) that surveillance cameras have led to a crime reduction of up to 90% in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
