A quarter of all CVs contain lies, according to the Association of Search and Selection Consultants, reports the Independent (Review, p17).

And Angela Edward, a policy adviser for the Institute of Personnel and Development, says the practice is on the increase.

'Gone are the days when you just filled in a simple job application. In the late Nineties, there's as much emphasis on sending out the perfect CV as there is on taking exams for a degree. No wonder job candidates feel pressurised into telling a few porkies,' she says.

A further survey by Robert Half, financial recruitment specialists, claims financial managers are the most suspicious employers with almost a third believing that half the candidates for a job have lied on their CVs.
