The 1000th school in England has voted for self-governing (grant-maintained) status, the Department of Education said today. Ballot results declared yesterday take the total of schools voting to opt out of local authority control up to the 1,000 mark.

Education Secretary John Patten today said: 'This is excellent news, and the clearest possible illustration of the popularity of self-governing schools.'
