The Glasgow Herald (p9) reports that Aberdeen city council's social work department is to be subjected to a further examination by Scottish Office inspectors.

The department is to be scrutinised again to see how it deals with known sex offenders after being at the centre of the Scott Simpson murder case. Scott was murdered by a convicted paedophile.

The Scottish Office examination will kick off a round of spot checks at other local authorities in Scotland.

Aberdeen city council social work director Peter Cassidy told the paper that a range of measures had been introduced to prevent a repeat of the tragic case.

'I think things are going reasonably well. Quite a number of measures are making steady progress,' he said.
