Aberdeen City Council committee convenors have successfully defended attempts by colleagues to see their special responsibility allowances cut, reports The Scotsman (p10).

Conservative and Liberal Democrat members wanted to see the SRAs cut for convenors and vice-convenors other than the councils' leader, deputy leader and lord provost.

However, council leader Margaret Smith said committee workloads had doubled and convenors had staff of 10,000 and a budget of over£250m to oversee.

SRAs of£260,000 are allocated on top of standard allowances of£300,000.
