Five men who were sexually abused as children in care homes run by Liverpool City Council during the 1970s have won compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

The board allowed an appeal, opening the way for awards of up to £25,000. It had previously ruled out compensation because the applicants have criminal convictions.

A Liverpool spokesman said the matter was between the individuals involved and the board.
