Sir John Banham has hit back at criticism from Chester City Council of the Local Government Commision's status quo recommendation for Cheshire.

Rejecting assertions from the city of strong local support for a unitary authority, Sir John said it would have been an expensive and ineffective solution.

Commenting on the 10% of residents who favoured the unitary option in a recent poll, Sir John said: 'I would hate to see what constituted trivial support.'
