Local Government Association chief executive Brian Briscoe clashed publicly with a Cambridgeshire councillor over a press release from the county.

In a speech, Mr Briscoe quoted the county as saying Hertfordshire 'for no good reason' had more money and spend than Cambridgeshire. Declaring an interest as a former Hertfordshire chief executive, he said this was an example of 'the ferrets in-a-bag image [local government] sometimes projects'.

John Howell, a former Conservative leader of Cambridgeshire, later said: 'It was not a very sensible thing to do to take the mickey out of one of your counties.'
