Local authorities wanting to bid for a share of a£100m programme for sports and recreation projects have until the end of March to apply.

Active England is a jointly-funded programme between the New Opportunities Fund (£77.5m) and Sport England (£31m) which aims to encourage creative approaches that will begin to drive up physical activity levels and sports participation rates in England in all sections of society.

Funding applications to the Active England programme have to be submitted by 31 March.

Symonds Sport & Leisure Consultancy senior leisure consultant Tom Pinnington said:

'Encouraging people to take more exercise is one of the government's key objectives in reducing rising levels of obesity in this country, and Active England is one of the major elements in that drive, alongside the overall Game Plan initiative.

'Therefore, the funding available represents an excellent opportunity for local authorities looking to develop new sports and leisure facilities in the near future - but the simple message is they have to act soon.'
