CIPFA needs to form strategic alliances so that it can compete internationally, according to institute chief executive David Adams.

Writing in this month's PT, Mr Adams says CIPFA lacks the resources to act alone on the international stage.

He writes: '[The UK accountancy profession] operates nationally on the basis of an uneasy and continually negotiated truce.'

Mr Adams also says the institute needs to regularly review the CIPFA qualification to ensure its continuing relevance.

He confirmed that he will step down as CIPFA chief executive when his contract comes to an end next March.
