The government would be required to publish annual adoption league tables under proposals in a private member's Bill before Parliament.

The Bill, introduced this week by Conservative MP Julian Brazier with all-party support, would make councils publish annual totals of children in care, adopted children and parents available to undertake adoptions.

They would also have to provide the health secretary with a list of children in care, together with the length of time each has been in care.

Last year fewer than 2,000 children were adopted of more than 50,000 in care, Mr Brazier told MPs. His Bill would expose councils holding children back from adoption for ideological reasons, he said.
