Health minister Jacqui Smith has launched the new national adoption register for England and Wales. New standards to improve the adoption process were launched alongside the register.

The register, run by charity Norwood Ravenswood, aims to speed up the

adoption process and make it work in a more effective way. It will link suitable families with children who are waiting to be adopted.

Speaking at the launch Ms Smith said: 'The register is an extra resource for adoption agencies to use to help them identify matches for adoptive families and children.

'Once adoption has been identified as the best course of action, we are determined children are adopted as quickly as possible.

'We are committed to increasing the rate of adoptions by 40% and the register is a vital part of meeting this target.'
