David Townsend, director of Croydon LBC social services, who has written a column in the newspaper of the annual social services conference for the last eight years, has been told by John Ransford of the ADSS that organisers 'do not think it is appropriate' for him to write this year, The Guardian reports (Society p6).

Last year Mr Townsend attacked social services chief inspector David Laming for 'thinking along the same lines as his political boss'.

'Some directors liked my piece, though some thought I had gone over the top,' Mr Townsend says.
