Nominations to the Metropolitan Police advisory committee from both the Association of London Authority and the London Boroughs Association were turned down by the home secretary.

'Instead the home secretary has hand picked the 11-strong membership which will include only two councillors,' said ALA policing spokesman Derek Sawyer.

'The new committee will neither be democratically representative of - nor democratically accountable to - Londoners.

'It is a toothless quango which will advise the home secretary, who continues to be the police authority for the capital. The new body is no substitute for a local, democratic authority which Londoners want and need.'
