The Association of Local Authority Chief Executives has written to deputy prime minister John Prescott, urging him not to accept the recommendations of the Audit Commission on the sacking of Walsall MBC chief executive Hardial Bhogal.

Alastair Robertson, ALACE honorary secretary, said there was no legal basis for terminating Mr Bhogal's contract.

The Audit Commission recommended the government direct Walsall to 'appoint a private sector management team to replace the current executive management, including the chief executive for one to two years' (LGC, 14, June).

Mr Robertson said the move would send out 'a clear message that it is not worthwhile taking on the challenge of the most difficult local authority areas'.
