The Association of Labour Councillors is holding the country's first online political election.

The ballot will be a crucial first test of internet voting, which

the government has so far shied away from.

Labour's 8,500 councillors will vote for their representatives on the National Policy Forum, one of the partyÕs main decision-making bodies.

Sitting members Leslie Hinds and London deputy mayor Nicky Gavron, from City of Edinburgh Council and Haringey LBC, are being challenged by Waltham Forest LBCÕs Narinder Matharoo and Newark & Sherwood DCÕs Carole Turner.

Sir Jeremy Beecham and Hammersmith & Fulham LBC's Sally Powell have been re-elected unopposed to the party's national executive committee.

Howard Knight, head of Labour's local government unit, said: 'If these elections are

successful, in terms of increasing voter participation, I would hope to see other parties and even the government use electronic voting.'
