London's council leaders are to ask the city's mayor and assembly to join the Association of London Government.

The ALG hopes the move will make it easier for London's 33 councils to work with the city-wide authority. The association said: 'The thinking behind it is that all the boroughs will want to work in liaison with the GLA and if it joined the boroughs in the same organisation it would help joint work.'

The ALG will also invite the mayor's fire and police authorities to become members, but plans to maintain council-only meetings to avoid any conflict of interest.
