The Association of London Government has welcomed Labour's reaffirmation of its commitment to a new strategic authority for the capital and the party's proposals to consult Londoners on the structure of the new body.

Welcoming Labour's consultation paper, 'A Voice for London', ALG chair Toby Harris said:

'In the ten years since the abolition of the GLC London has been without a democratic voice capable of speaking up for the capital both in negotiations with the government and in Europe.

'At last Londoners have the opportunity to have their say on the way in which their city should be governed. The ALG and the London boroughs will respond constructively to Labour's challenge to design the new government for the capital, and we will encourage London's representative organisations and Londoners themselves to participate in this important consultation exercise.'
