The number of appeals against council tax banding in England and Wales has reached 945,795 by the end of March, The Guardian reports (p6).

The figures, released in a parliamentary written reply by the treasury economic secretary, Anthony Nelson, also reveal that 107,818 had been settled without referral to valuation tribunals.

He added that 660,384 had been referred to the tribunals within six months of receipt. Of these, 189,944 had been settled without a hearing and 2,868 had been determined as a result of a hearing.
