Almost a quarter (24%) of people aged 16 and over in Britain said they had done unpaid work through a group or organisation in the previous 12 months, according to the 1992 General Household Survey published today.

The average time spent on voluntary activities by those who had done them in the previous four weeks was 15.6 hours, just under four hours a week. This suggests in an average week about 20 million hours of voluntary work are carried out by adults.

These are among the key statistics derived from a special section of questions about voluntary work in the survey for the Home Office.
