Alnwick DC is launching a legal battle against deputy prime minister John Prescott, reports the Newcastle Journal online.

Last month Mr Prescott revoked outline planning permission granted by the council more than four years ago for a supermarket on the edge of the town.

But the council is to contest Mr Prescott's ruling, not least because of threats of compensation claims from the supermarket concerned.

District chairman Ian Hinson said: 'The matter is in the hands of the council's insurers and on legal advice the council has lodged an appeal to the high court against the secretary of state's decision.'
